Accessibility is not a code fix

Accessibility is fundamentally a design problem.

Managers

It’s the “extra” the client has to opt in to.

We talk about it and sometimes kick off a project with good intentions. But honestly, we don’t really understand it.

Engineers

When someone with a disability complains, or we learn of a legal requirement we weren’t aware of, we apply a quick code fix. But as quickly as possible!

Designers

When comps are simple, we adhere to good contrast and clear labels, but as it progresses and we get a bit more adventurous, we feel these things are too constraining.

QA

It’s all about automation. As long as the machines are happy, we’re happy.

Accessibility is fundamentally a design problem. But it’s the design of the process. User experience means nothing without users. A good product is usable by everyone. A usable product must be accessible. An accessible product is a good product.
